Scottish totem pole a winner for Iain

Carving champ Iain Chalmers has won the Carve Carrbridge competition for the second time in a row with his 'Taste of Scotland' carving - a Scottish totem pole featuring a Scottish terrier, salmon and thistles, crowned with a highland cow . Commenting on his win Iain said "last year the logs were long and narrow so I thought to do a tall carving. I tried to make a Scottish totem pole and put in as many separate carvings as possible into it."

Iain explained that he had been drawing the carving for the last few days but still had to make significant changes to the design. "I had to think on my feet" he said. Iain also took the People's Choice prize where the audience votes for their favourite carving.

Second was Daniel Cordell from England with 'Highland Takeaway' a dynamic carving of an eagle swooping down on a fawn. Daniel who has been carving for 14 years said his carving was inspired by his love of Scottish wildlife. For those worried about the welfare of the young deer, Daniel joked that the fawn escapes the eagle's talons.

In third place was USA competitor Brett Mclean with 'Frog on Thistle'. Jordan Anderson of the USA won Best New Entrant with 'Kalin Warrior'.

The event was filmed by BBC Landward with presenter Euan McIlwraith having a go in the Quick Carve competition where carvers get just 30 minutes to create a carving.

The BBC Landward feature is to be broadcast on Friday 30 September.

2011 Pre Event News Release

Carve Carrbridge “Raw Adrenaline"

This Saturday 24 top international chainsaw carvers descent upon the sleepy highland village of Carrbridge. Dayton Scoggins is currently favourite to challenge last year`s winner Iain Chalmers. Dayton will be competing at Carve Carrbridge for the first time. During the event competitors only have four hours to create their main carving from a 2.5m (8 foot) Sitka Spruce log.

He is a native Mississippian and prior to becoming a full time chainsaw artist worked as a towboat captain, pushing barges. Now a world class chainsaw artist, he travels the world and is recognised as highly competitive and extremely talented.

In 2009 top American carver Bob King won with an impressive cougar carving but was defeated when defending his title in 2010 by Chalmers with his 'Bear Necessities' carving.

Commenting on the build up to this years event Iain said “ The line up is the strongest yet but anyone could win. I won't be giving up the title easily. I have three ideas for my carving but will decide once I see the log." Iain added "No other show in the world is like it, it is just so rapid and what is achieved in four hours is outstanding".

Another contender for first place is Tim Klock from Altoona, Pennsylvania who has never before travelled outside America. Tim in particular enjoys the “raw adrenaline” of the 30 minute quick carve event calling it “full throttle art".

As well as six Scottish carvers, there are also carvers entered from the Netherlands, Italy, Russia, England and Wales.

Event organiser Gavin Gerrard said “Carve Carrbridge is now established on the world chainsaw carving calendar. Each year the standard just gets higher and higher from the local and international carvers. This year with so many expert chainsaw carvers competing it is likely to be the most competitive and greatest spectacle for visitors yet.”

Guest judges this year will be joined by Euan McIlwraith, presenter for BBC Landward.

Today in front of a record crowd, Iain Chalmers won Carve Carrbridge with his wonderful 'Bear Necessities' carving of a group of four bears. According to Iain, the carving was a last minute decision. `I love carving bears so thought I would do something that I love doing. When I carve bears I normally do vertical groups but for a change today I decided to try a horizontal composition. I did not think I would win but I thought it would be popular.”

Iain has been carving for eight years. Before that he was working with chain saws and one day saw someone carving with a chainsaw and decided to give it a try.

This is the the sixth time Iain has competed in Carve Carrbridge, previously achieving a third and a fourth placing. Following his win he has vowed to return next year to defend his title.

Ian works as a professional carver and does private commissions. He can be contacted via his web site www.chainsawcreations.co.uk

Bob King 2nd with 'A Hare Raising Experience' (High Resolution )

Bob King the 2009 winner came second with his 'A Hare Raising Experience' a dynamic carving of an eagle swooping down on a hare. Commenting on the event Bob said “the crowds today were spectacular with their support, and that drives us to work even harder in the competition. The wood provided was beautiful to work with, and the carvers are a great bunch of guys and gals. Another successful year for Carve Carrbridge.”
